D.H. Griffin was selected for the environmental abatement, demolition, and site development of the former Charlotte Observer site in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The site is now known as Legacy Union.
The Observer buildings totaled 360,000 square feet on two city blocks, and included a five-story building, tunnels connecting the former printing presses in the main building with the newsprint storage under Church Street and underground packing and warehouse facilities. The location is a highly visible parcel of more than 10 acres adjacent to I-277 and Bank of America Stadium. D.H. Griffin had to complete some exterior work at night and on weekends to avoid closing down the major thoroughfare during peak transit hours.
This fast track project included asbestos removal, universal waste removal and removal of some C&D waste as PCB contaminated due to contaminated grout/caulking in building. Following the environmental and demolition scope of work, D.H. Griffin Infrastructure LLC was hired under a separate contract for grading, site utility, and maintenance work.
