Plant Gorgas, Demolition of Units 4 and 5

Demolition and abatement of Units 4 & 5 at this 1920's Alabama Power Facility. Project included 3 boilers, 2 turbine generator sets, 9,000 tons of non-ferrous and ferrous scrap metal, and 45,000 cyds of backfill. Used shaped charges to trip one steel framed boiler. This 750,000 sf demo included building separation from Turbine Area that was to remain. DHGW also received a change order to backfill basement.

Project Summary:

• Controlled toppling of 115' turbine floor wall adjacent to live switch yard without disruption.
• Controlled toppling of (8) story boiler located 32' from adjacent structure to remain.
